The flak jacket is made of small plates and microscopic woven strands of fibre that combine together to create a mould of meshed-plate armour that is comfortable and light, and as the name suggests, designed to be equipped around the torso.
Because of the materials that are used in its construction, the jacket feels rigid to the touch but is fluid at the seams. Initially developed as a light form of protection for pilots, the jacket’s main focus is to stop shrapnel, and it is only partially reflective of small arms laser fire. Due to this limitation, the flak jacket faded from ubiquity as ballistic and laser technologies advanced.
The flak jacket is a first line of defence against blunt force trauma, mass drivers and metal shards caused by explosions. Due to its light weight but protective limitations, it is often found among combatants who will spend most of their time away from the main thrust of a battle, whether as artillery or inside a vehicle.
The newer make of armour is significantly superior to the outdated flak jacket since they provide better protection and cover a larger area of the body. While the more sophisticated types of armour are used by soldiers in most military and para-military organizations, this decent form of defence still benefits many security groups, guards, and citizens looking for a more affordable or simpler design.
